Video report RNW — Genital mutilation used to be a lifetime sentence for a woman. These days the results of the damaging practice can be partly restored: one fairly simple operation gives a circumsized woman her clitoris back. In Burkina Faso Femke van Zeijl followed one of these women before, during and after her medical procedure.
By choosing reconstructive surgery, women are breaking the taboo on female sexuality: ‘I let myself be operated to reconquer what his been taken from me as a little girl. My sexuality.’
